Just a few months ago, a new three-headed monster was born. That would the combination of underground hip-hop greats Open Mike Eagle, Video Dave, and STILL RIFT. Together they are known as Previous Industries, and their de facto leader is the first of those three names. If you know anything about these guys, you are well aware by now that doing things by the conventional hip-hop playbook is not the forte. When you go into their music, you are in for a one-of-a-kind listening experience almost every time. Even though these three gentlemen are Chicago natives, they are currently based out of the L.A. area. Pretty soon, these East coasters are going to be dropping their first album.

But before that comes, Previous Industries is back with a new promotional single called "Zayre". This is their third drop overall, but it is their fourth track. Their inaugural release was a two-pack consisting of "Showbiz" and "Braids". After that followed "Pliers", which hit platforms on April 23.

One thing that is cool about each song title so far, is that each one is a reference to a former business. You can credit Stereogum for discovering that neat fun fact. What is even cooler is that Previous Industries is playing into this quite a bit, even including hidden meaning in their lyrics. "When you have time, watch the commercials for Zayre and know that it was a real place where people bought action figures and pants. The producer Child Actor is a genius. He showed us his formula once, and we got really scared... There's secret lyrics to the hook that [Open Mike Eagle will] never tell you. Dave might tell you for the right price, but he never will". Welcome to summer, which will hopefully be 2024's best season yet thanks to the best of the best hip-hop releases of the first week of June rounded up right here on our new Fire Emoji playlist update. First off, there are two obvious big drops to cover, starting with Eminem's new single "Houdini." Not only does this zany track see him paying homage to his career, but also playing with its perception with some of that old comical fire. The other unmissable track to drop this week was the remix of Megan Thee Stallion and GloRilla's "Wanna Be" with Cardi B. As expected, the chemistry here is off the charts, and Bardi's appearance makes the cut even more confident.

Elsewhere on Fire Emoji, we also have a short but sweet new Palestine-dedicated album from Belly titled 96 Miles From Bethlehem. One of the highlights on it is certainly "Blue Bags," whose shots of distortion, industrial influences, and eerily looped vocal samples craft an engaging journey. On a more woozy and ethereal note, we have new two-pack single from LUCKI, 2 Faced, Pt. 2, which contains "Heavy On My Heart" and "Courtesy Of." The latter has a particularly melancholy piano line paired with a peppy drum pattern that's particularly pleasing to the ear.

Moving forward with our next new single, JasonMartin enlisted Jay Worthy, DJ Quik, and Larry June for the soulful "GURBS & YOUNGS." The bass definitely carries the track's funky demeanor, and some light chimes and xylophones really invoke that West Coast spirit. But Fire Emoji also has some classic gritty East Coast raps this week thanks to Meek Mill's new song "5AM IN PHILLY." Its main draw is definitely his energetic and passionate rapping, but the minimal beat carries it well.

Kendrick Lamar continues his dominance with "Not Like Us," as the Drake diss has apparently even inspired strippers to work it in their routine. Moreover, a clip recently went viral of a dancer crip-walking to the track, which some fans joked about angering the gutter-minded folks in attendance who were throwing dollar bills before. Either way, you can hear the crowd react pretty excitedly to the moves, which is certainly one of the more creative tributes to the song to pop up this week. In fact, we can't help but wonder whether or not this is a national phenomenon or if this is an isolated incident.

Jokes aside, Kendrick Lamar got a lot of commercial love (and even more critical acclaim) for his slew of Drake disses, and so did the Toronto superstar. Now that the battle is in the rearview mirror, it will be very interesting to see how their artistries and careers evolve from here, if at all. Maybe they will get right back to business as usual for them (as Drizzy proved with his recent Sexyy Red feature) or we'll only see the fruits of this labor down the line. One thing's for sure: this feud will still be a major talking point for the rest of 2024.

However, while no one really knows what's next, there is a lot of hope for the best case scenario. Drake is always dropping material, so fans are looking forward to his next moves all the time. But Kendrick Lamar is a more elusive figure, one that took five years to follow up his biggest commercial success. As such, rumors that he's "locked in" on new music is very exciting for fans, but there's no telling whether this will further the beef.

Hopefully it doesn't, as it would be a tad corny to build up your next album by dissing Drake and beating that dead horse even further. But when it comes to him and Kendrick Lamar, who's to say? There are even folks who think that they should let bygones be bygones and work together again. What's more likely: another "Poetic Justice," a Kendrick album within the next three years, or a dancer strutting their stuff to a PDF-file-alleging banger?

Jake Paul has released a full video reacting to the news that his fight with Mike Tyson, originally scheduled for July 20, is now postponed. Moreover, this disappointing news for boxing fans comes amid recommendations from Tyson's doctors that he heal from his ulcer scare before continuing full training for the bout. Organizers will reportedly announce a new date by next Friday (June 7), and fans are really looking forward to getting geared up for the showdown yet again. As for Paul, he had previously expressed a desire for Iron Mike to be at his very best for their match-up, so he's taking this delay in stride and wishing his opponent the best.

"Obviously, devastating news, I'm heartbroken," Jake Paul's video response to the Mike Tyson postponement. "Speechless, like, gutted. Baddies Caribbean is as confrontational as ever, as the Zeus Network reality television show's upcoming Sunday episode (June 2) is looking like a doozy. Furthermore, this also comes amid a bit of a complicated celebrity situation for Baddies star Natalie Nunn, although it's one we're sure she's not complaining about. Megan Thee Stallion recently brought her out onstage just months after the Houston MC caught overt shots from Nicki Minaj, which caused a bit of a stir. After all, Nicki had previously shouted out Nunn on the Lil Uzi Vert collab "Endless Fashion" off of 2023's Pink Tape. Maybe folks are just reading too deep into this, but the reality star has enough beef to deal with without getting into the rap world's murky waters.

Last week, Nicki Minaj was arrested in Amsterdam and hit with a drug charge, later getting released and given a fine. She canceled her scheduled performances in the Netherlands capital as a result, and soon took to social media to vent. The "FTCU" rapper made it clear that she wasn't happy with the way she was treated by authorities. She suggested that the run-in could have been a result of racial profiling, citing a similarly unfortunate situation Ari Lennox dealt with in 2021.

Now, however, Dutch police are refuting those claims. A rep for the department recently spoke with the NOS, stating that authorities were simply following protocol. Moreover, they called it "annoying" that Nicki suggested the arrest could have been racially motivated, insisting that they treat everyone equally.

Dutch Police Claim Nicki Minaj's Arrest Went "Smoothly"

"It's annoying if she experienced it that way," the rep said. "We arrested her when we found dozens of joints in her luggage. The lady was released four hours after arrest in consultation with the public prosecutor, and after paying a fine. I think that it all went very smoothly. It's annoying that she drew that card."

They also spoke with BBC about the incident, making similar claims. "We just do our job, and it is protocol to search luggage and arrest a person when we find drugs," they told the outlet. "The arrest was around 5:30 p.m., the release at 9:30 p.m. We stand for a professional organization that treats everybody equal, no matter what."
