Brittney Griner Breaks Down In Tears In 1st Interview Since Being Released From Russian Custody: 'I Was Just So Scared'

WNBA star Brittney Griner is opening up about being detained in Russia.

A trailer for her first interview since being released dropped earlier today (April 22nd), and showed the basketball star tearfully recounting her experience.

The interview, conducted by GMA's Robin Roberts, will air next month. In the clip, the TV personality recalls the moment Brittney Griner was caught by Russian officials with a THC vape cartridge in her carry-on luggage back in 2022.  The Phoenix Mercury player admitted to thinking her "life is over" in the moment, and insisted that she had never previously traveled with cannabis.

The clip further previewed the women's discussion about Brittney Griner's nine-year prison sentence. As Robin Roberts noted, the penal colony was reported to be "one of the worse prisons in Russia."

Speaking on the matter, Griner became overwhelmed with tears as she stated:

"I was just so scared for everything, cause it's just so much unknown"

Griner also talked about the conditions she was subjected to, including sleeping on a blood stained mattress and being deprived of soap and toilet paper. She stated in the clip the ordeal made her feel "less than a human," adding that at one point she considered taking her own life, stating:

"I didn't think I could get through what I needed to get through."

Despite Giner's heart wrenching tale, she ultimately was able to reach the light at the end of the tunnel, which was also discussed in the interview. If you recall, President Joe Biden successfully negotiated the athlete's release with Russian President Vladamir Putin nearly 10 months after she was arrested. Griner made it back to US soil the following day, and was reunited with her family and wife Cherelle, who she's now expecting her first child with.

Griner's interview with Roberts is set to air on ABC May 1st.
