Prayers up for the family of filmmaker Morgan Spurlock.

Reports state that the creative behind the Oscar-nominated documentary Super Size Me has sadly passed away from cancer complications.

Reportedly, family members of Morgan Spurlock, who was 53 at the time of death, confirmed his transition from life yesterday (Thursday, May 23rd). They shared that the filmmaker was at peace in his final moments, surrounded by friends and family. His brother Craig Spurlock, who collaborated with his celebrity sibling on multiple projects, reportedly stated:

"It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan...Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas and generosity. Today the world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him."

Spurlock's career as a creative spans more than two decades, but the height of his fame was certainly ignited by the release of his ground-breaking 2004 documentary Super Size Me. The film chronicled Spurlock's physical and mental changes while eating nothing but McDonald's every day for a month.

Shedding light on the serious health risks associated with consuming too much fast food, the movie became a critically acclaimed success, effectively ending most fast-food chains' "super size" options. It also educated many Americans on the dangers of highly processed foods and continues to do so years later.

Spurlock went on to explore more sociopolitical issues throughout his career, including the Bush-era War on Terror-inspired film Where in the World Is Osama bin Laden?, and the corporate power-centered movie The Greatest Movie Ever Sold. Though it's unclear when exactly Spurlock began his fight with cancer, reports note that the movie-maker disclosed in recent years that he had been "consistently" consuming alcohol since he started drinking at the age of 13.

Spurlock is survived by his sons Laken and Kallen; his mother Phyllis; his father Ben; brothers Craig and Barry; and his former wives Alexandra Jamieson and Sara Bernstein.
