Racist AI-Generated Videos Made Using Google Veo 3 Are Going Viral On TikTok

Racist trolls appear to be using Google Veo 3, the tech company's AI video generator tool, to make racist videos that have amassed millions of views on TikTok.







Nonprofit media watchdog Media Matters found the videos littered with racist tropes specifically targeting Black people on TikTok.




According to the watchdog group, one of the videos has been viewed over 14.2 million times and was made using Google Veo 3, because the "Veo" watermark could be seen in the corner of the clips in question.




Media Matters also pointed out that some users used the hashtags "Veo 3" or "AI" in their posts. Another indication that Veo was used to create the clips was their 8-second length, or that they were "composed of multiple clips each lasting no more than 8 seconds," which aligns with Veo 3's 8-second limit on their videos.




On its website, Google claims it will "block harmful requests and results" when users create videos using Veo 3, which was launched in May.




TikTok says "hate speech and hateful behavior has no place on TikTok," and that it "will not recommend content that contains negative stereotypes about a person or group with a protected attribute."




In a statement issued to The Verge, TikTok spokesperson Ariane de Selliers said, We proactively enforce robust rules against hateful speech and behavior and have removed the accounts we identified in the report, many of which were already banned prior to the report publishing."




The Verge also found those same videos, identified by Media Matters, still available on YouTube, while Wired discovered some on Instagram.




Other videos highlighted by Media Matters contained anti-Semitic messaging, racist depictions of immigrants, and Asian people.
